The 2026 AFRIGEO Symposium gala night came alive as the Director-General and Chief Executive of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Adepoju, joined delegates from across Africa and beyond in an evening of music, cultural displays and dancing.
The event, held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites (NACCAS), Asokoro, Abuja, was part of activities lined up for the ongoing 2026 AFRIGEO Symposium, which has attracted experts, scientists, policymakers and representatives of international organisations to discuss the development of Africa’s space science and technology ecosystem.
The well-attended gala night offered participants a break from the formal technical sessions of the symposium, providing an opportunity for them to interact in a relaxed atmosphere while experiencing aspects of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and social life.
Welcoming participants to the event, Prof. Adepoju expressed appreciation to the delegates, particularly those who travelled from different parts of the world to attend the symposium.
He noted that their participation and contributions had added value to the success of the programme, stressing that the gala night was not just about entertainment but also an opportunity to strengthen relationships and encourage meaningful interactions among participants.
According to him, the gathering also provided delegates with an avenue to unwind after days of intensive technical discussions and build stronger bonds that could support future collaboration.
The evening featured colourful cultural performances and live musical presentations, showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and its long-standing tradition of “unity in diversity.” The performances also offered international delegates a glimpse into the country’s vibrant cultural and social traditions.
Among the dignitaries at the event was the Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Peter Anosike, who presented awards to deserving individuals and participating countries in recognition of their contributions to the AFRIGEO initiative.
The award presentation was one of the major highlights of the evening, recognising outstanding members and participating countries whose contributions have helped to promote the AFRIGEO programme.
The ceremony also featured the cutting of the symposium cake by Prof. Adepoju alongside members of the organising committee, symbolising the collective efforts behind the success of the 2026 AFRIGEO Symposium.
As the formal proceedings drew to a close, the evening took a more lively turn, with Prof. Adepoju joining other participants on the dance floor in a celebration that drew cheers and applause from the gathering, bringing to a close an evening that celebrated the success of the symposium.
