Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and a true giant of the continent, today October 1, 2025, celebrate 65 years of independence, a journey that continues to inspire hope, courage, and resilience.

While some observers still argue that the nation stands at a crossroads between development and underdevelopment, the Nigerian spirit of liberation, emancipation, and transformation remains unbroken.

Since 1960, Nigeria has recorded remarkable progress across multiple sectors. One of the most profound achievements is the nation’s entry into the global space arena, a bold step once considered the exclusive preserve of advanced economies.

Recognizing the strategic role of space science and technology in driving sustainable development, the Federal Government established the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) to deploy space based solutions for the country’s socio-economic advancement.

Over the years, NASRDA has become a beacon of African innovation, spearheading projects that demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity for excellence.

From the design and successful launch of satellites that support agriculture, security, communication, and disaster management, to forging global partnerships with leading space institutions, the Agency has firmly placed Nigeria on the map as a respected player in the international space community.

Marking this historic Independence milestone, the Director General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, has called on all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to unite in building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

According to him, the Nigerian project is a collective responsibility as the nation’s story is one of resilience and transformation, adding that every citizen has a duty to contribute meaningfully to the future they all desire.

Dr. Adepoju further emphasized that the successes achieved so far by NASRDA reflect not just technological advancement, but also the resilience of a people determined to transform their society.

He urged Nigerians to collectively harness science, technology, and innovation to secure a brighter destiny for the nation.

As the country celebrates this landmark occasion, NASRDA’s vision of using space technology as a tool for development stands as a shining reminder that Nigeria’s greatness is not just a dream, but a reality in progress.

It is on this note that the Director General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, extends warm wishes to the management and staff of the Agency, and to Nigerians across the globe, on the celebration of NIGERIA’S 65TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY.
