The NASRDA VLBI project currently being executed by the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory as second in Africa is now in the final stage of completion.

Receiving a delegation from the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory in his office in Abuja the Director General, National Space Research and Development Agency, Professor Matthew Adepoju was informed that the project is now at 98 percent stage of completion.

The NASRDA Boss who expressed delight for the visit by the delegation underscored the importance of the strategic collaboration which according to him has provided Nigerian scientists and engineers access to world-class expertise, modern scientific equipment and opportunities to build indigenous capacity.

Professor Adepoju pointed out that Nigeria attaches great importance to its relationship with the People’s Republic of China, stressing that the partnership has brought significant benefits to the country’s space sector, including the on-going development of the VLBI facility.

He commended the project’s team for its determination and resilience in the successful execution of the VLBI project despite numerous challenges.

Professor Adepoju emphasized that the VLBI project has brought great prestige to Nigeria, particularly the Space Agency, saying the facility has further positioned the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CGG) on the global scientific map.

He assured that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring a smooth transition to the final commissioning and seamless operation of the facility.

Professor Adepoju maintained that NASRDA scientists and engineers should be actively involved in all operations and activities of the project in order to build capacity as well provide knowledge that would positively impact their professional advancement and career development.

He commended the former Director of the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics who is now a research Director in the Agency, Dr. Joseph Dodo, for his dedication and outstanding contributions towards the successful implementation of the VLBI project.

Earlier, Dr. Joseph Dodo explained that the visit was to keep the Director General and the entire management team of NASRDA abreast of progress and current status of the project as well as plans for its final completion.

In his remarks, the Head of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory delegation, Prof. Jinling Li, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to collaborate with NASRDA on the project.

Prof Li however outlined some current challenges as the team works towards the successful completion of the project.
