The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence for his outstanding contributions in utilizing satellite technology to advance climate monitoring and disaster planning.
The award was presented by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) at the National Anticipatory Conference held in Abuja.
While receiving the honour, Dr. Adepoju stated that the Agency remains deeply committed to building strategic partnership with national institutions to effectively drive economic growth and national development.
He explained that such partnerships not only strengthen NASRDA’s effectiveness but also support Nigeria’s broader development goals by enabling coordinated responses to climate, disaster, and security challenges.
The Director General assured the IRC of NASRDA’s full support in addressing identified emerging challenges through accurate prediction, targeted preparedness and proactive interventions aimed at safeguarding lives and critical national assets.
While highlighting the Agency’s broad impact, Dr. Adepoju said NASRDA has already deployed equipment for seismic monitoring, tremor detection, and flood tracking in Abuja and its environs.
He appreciated President Bola Tinubu for the continued support towards the Space program and the recent approval of new satellites, which he described as a major boost to Nigeria’s Space program and national development.
According to him, these new satellites will be equipped with onboard processing capabilities, to enable real time image analysis and faster delivery of critical information, significantly cutting response times during emergencies.
He further expressed gratitude to the organizers of the conference and all participants, commending their dedication to advancing anticipatory planning and disaster preparedness across Nigeria.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global humanitarian organization that provides emergency aid and long term support to refugees and communities affected by conflict, displacement, and natural disasters.
