The Director General and Chief Executive, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju, has stressed the need for result oriented collaboration with experts and strategic partners in the provision of relevant satellite data and imageries for the smooth running of their operations.
He made this statement while playing host to the Project team of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACRESAL) at the Agency’s Headquarters in Abuja.
The NASRDA boss who emphasized the Agency’s commitment to promoting accessibility and transparency in space data usage ,explained that a senior officer within the Agency has been designated to oversee and ensure easy access to the archive of satellite images, facilitating support for stakeholders and researchers who require the data for various developmental purposes.
Dr. Adepoju expressed his decision to introduce capacity building programs and expand technical training for learning and research purposes.
According to him,NASRDA is working towards expanding the training initiatives to build a stronger ecosystem that meets Nigeria’s primary developmental needs.
He said, under his administration, the Space Agency will continue to develop relevant programs that align with global standards while creating opportunities for Nigerians.
Dr. Adepoju who appreciated the support of the World Bank through its ACRESAL Project, expressed enthusiasm for ongoing collaboration while looking forward to deepening the existing partnership with the Agency.
Speaking earlier, the task team Leader for ACRESAL and a Senior Environmental Specialist, at the World Bank, Dr. Joy Agene commended the NASRDA boss for his consistent presence and leadership throughout the implementation of ACRESAL activities which according to her, demonstrates not just technical knowledge, but also policy and leadership skills.
Dr. Agene revealed plans for a national hackathon as part of the ACRESAL initiative and proposed that NASRDA take the leading role in the actualization of the program.
She added that this will be one of the first under the World Bank for Nigerian youths and winners will receive prizes, global exposure, and networking opportunities.
Dr. Agene also noted that the project and its associated programs are currently in the design phase, after which details will be shared with NASRDA.
She emphasized the importance of setting up a centre of excellence to support the initiative and expressed optimism about integrating it into ongoing activities under the ACRESAL work plan.
While praising the Dr. Adepoju leadership qualities which she said serves as a powerful motivator for partners and stakeholders, Dr Agene explained that efforts are inline to train young people, connect them to international forums, and improve their capacity to reflect a new generation of leaders in Nigeria’s social and environmental sectors.
