Director
Zonal Advanced Space Technology Application Laboratory (ZASTAL) Kashere, Gombe

Dr. Hyelpamduwa Yaro, the Zonal Director of ZASTAL, holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Maiduguri. His commitment to enhancing his expertise led him to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Geographic Information Systems (PGD GIS), followed by a Master of Science in Environmental Resources Planning. His academic journey culminated with the attainment of a Ph.D. in Environmental Resources Planning, which solidified his position as a leading expert in the field.

Since the establishment of ZASTAL in 2017, Dr. Yaro has spearheaded numerous impactful projects that reflect his dedication to the advancement of environmental research and technological applications. Some of the key projects include:

  • Development of Remote Sensing and GIS Predictive Model for Desertification Early Warning: Recognizing the threat of desertification in North-Eastern Nigeria. This project created a predictive model for desertification early warning system with appropriate mitigation efforts.
  • Mapping and Characterization of Mineral Resources in North-East Nigeria: This project focused on the identification and mapping of valuable mineral resources with the North-east Nigeria, which can significantly contribute to the region’s economic development.
  • Geospatial Expansion of Gombe Metropolis: Through comprehensive mapping. This project assessed the growth of Gombe Metropolis before and after the creation of the state, providing valuable data for urban planning.
  • Environmental and Socio-Economic Impact Assessment of the Challawa Gorge Dam in Kano: This project evaluated the environmental and socio-economic implications of the dam, providing crucial insights for decision-makers.
  • Geodatabase Creation and Mapping of Health Facilities: By cataloging health facilities across North-Eastern Nigeria, this project is supporting government’s efforts to improve health service delivery in the region.
  • Mapping and Analysis of Bean Cultivation Areas: This project identified optimal regions for bean cultivation in Gombe State, supporting agricultural sustainability and food security.
  • Geospatial Analysis of Deforestation: Addressing critical environmental issues, the project contributed data to analyze deforestation trends in North-Eastern Nigeria, informing conservation strategies.
  • Identification of Irrigation Farming Areas: This project mapped areas engaged in irrigation farming, assisting policymakers in improving agricultural productivity.
  • Mapping School Facilities in Borno and Yobe States: This project focused on education by creating databases of schools in these states, contributing to educational planning and access improvements.
  • Inventory of Forest Reserves: Through remote sensing and GIS, the project conducted inventories of forest reserves in North-Eastern Nigeria, enhancing the understanding of forest dynamics.
  • Comparative Analysis of Fuels Used in Gombe Metropolis: This project analyzed the reliance on various energy sources, facilitating informed discussions on energy sustainability.
  • Land Use and Land Cover Change Study: A thorough examination of land use changes in Kashere, Gombe State, has helped track the region’s environmental transformation.
  • Remote Sensing and GIS-Based Land Suitability Analysis: The project assessed land suitability for major crops in Bauchi State, supporting agricultural planning.

Under Dr. Yaro’s leadership, ZASTAL continues to play a pivotal role in addressing critical environmental issues through research, capacity building, and technological innovation. The laboratory’s mandates focus on various pressing areas, including grazing land studies, dryland management, agricultural research, and climate studies, paving the way for sustainable development in the North-Eastern region of Nigeria.
