The Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju, has reiterated the Agency’s commitment to support food security and sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria through the strategic application of space science and technology.
He made this known while receiving a team from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to the NASRDA Headquarters in Abuja.
The Director-General while highlighting NASRDA’s critical role in ensuring food security said, the Ahency is poised to provide satellite-based data, Earth observation solutions, and geospatial intelligence to enhance agricultural planning, boost productivity, and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges.
According to him, access to accurate and timely satellite data is vital for monitoring crop performance, assessing soil moisture levels, predicting weather patterns, and supporting early warning systems.
He noted that these tools, empower farmers, researchers, and policymakers to make informed decisions that improve agricultural outcomes.
Dr. Adepoju further emphasized that NASRDA remains dedicated to collaborating with key stakeholders, development partners, and international organizations to deploy innovative space-based solutions aimed at addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable farming practices across the country.
He also noted that sustainable agriculture is fundamental to national development, food sufficiency, and economic stability, stressing the importance of integrating modern technology into Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.
The NASRDA Boss expressed appreciation to the FAO delegation for the visit and their continued interest in partnering with the Space Agency.
Speaking earlier, the Leader of the delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Mr. Mezzera Marco, appreciated the Director General for the warm reception and his persistent efforts to build on existing partnerships for the mutual benefit of both parties.
He highlighted the importance of strengthening partnerships among government institutions, development partners, private sector, as well as local communities.
Mr. Marco stated that such collaboration is essential to transforming agri-food systems and building resilience against the impact of climate change.
He added that the FAO looks forward to a closer working relationship with NASRDA, particularly in harnessing space-based technologies and data-driven solutions to support agricultural development and enhance food security.
