The Honourable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, has declared his resolve to drive a new wave of scientific and technological transformation that will reposition Nigeria as a hub of innovation and progress.
He made this known while delivering an address at the celebration of the World Science Day for Peace and Development, themed, “Trust, Transformation and Tomorrow: The Science We Need for 2050″, held at the headquarters of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in Abuja.
The newly appointed Minister stated that his leadership would not be confined to the Ministry alone but would extend to every part of Nigeria, with a focus on inspiring scientists, researchers, students, and innovators to use science and technology in solving national problems.
Dr. Udeh explained that his goal is to ensure that innovation becomes a practical tool for inclusive prosperity rather than mere discussions or theoretical concepts.
Speaking on the theme, the Minister noted that trust in science can be restored when citizens see tangible benefits from research and innovation.
He urged all relevant stakeholders to unite in rebuilding trust in science and technology as engines of peace, progress and relevance for tomorrow.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, FMIST, Mrs. Esuabana Nko-Asanye, said the Federal Government is committed to building a robust innovation ecosystem that positions Nigeria as a leader in scientific advancement across Africa.
According to her, this year’s celebration provides an opportunity to deepen collaboration among scientists, researchers, and policymakers to build public trust in science and apply it to address real-life challenges.
Mrs. Nko-Asanye further described science and innovation as the foundation for achieving true economic diversification, calling on Nigerians to take pride in the nation’s growing innovation landscape and actively contribute to its advancement.
In his goodwill message, The Director General and Chief Executive NASRDA Dr Matthew Adepoju reiterated that science remains the world’s most powerful tool for transformation, stressing its potential to reshape economies, strengthen climate resilience, and build a sustainable future for Nigeria.
The NASRDA boss said that the 2025 World Science Day is a call to action for stakeholders to innovate boldly and turn ideas into solutions for humanity.
Dr. Adepoju, who expressed delight at hosting the Minister of FMIST at the Agency on his first official engagement, noted that NASRDA will continue to utilize space science and technology to make meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s scientific and innovation ecosystem.
During a panel session, the Director-General highlighted NASRDA’s key achievements and ongoing activities, which include the provision of satellite imagery, geospatial intelligence and mapping services, as well as NASRDA’s contributions to the successful eradication of polio in Nigeria.
Dr. Adepoju further revealed that four new satellites are currently in the pipeline to enhance the Agency’s capacity to deliver on its mandate.
According to him, the projects align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as space science remains ubiquitous and relevant to every sector of national development.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of awards to the Etsu Kwali Luka Nizassan III for his contribution to science development and the presentation of awards and scholarships to two students for their curiousity in STEM.
