In line with his three-point agenda of deploying Space Science and Technology for socio-economic transformation, the Director General and Chief Executive, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Mathew Adepoju, has reiterated the Agency’s drive to harness Space enabled data and innovations to strengthen Geological surveys, boost environmental protection, and accelerate socio-economic growth in Nigeria.
He made this known while playing host to the Director General, Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), and his team during a courtesy visit at Agency’s Headquarters in Abuja.
Dr. Adepoju said the collaboration between both agencies will channel the power of Space Technology to support Geological mapping, Resource exploration, and Environmental conservation, that will effectively address critical national challenges.
While stating the economic potential of the sector, the NASRDA boss emphasized that the Agency is committed to creating billionaires among Nigerian youths by opening opportunities in Space Technology, entrepreneurship, and innovation.
He noted that the recent Presidential approval to mainstream NASRDA’s activities across all MDAs position the Agency as a key driver of National revenue generation.
Dr Adepoju stressed the importance of training, capacity building, and Satellite integration in geological activities, saying such initiatives will cut human labour and improve efficiency to deliver precision results.
According to him, the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics, one of the Agency’s activity centres located in Toro, Bauchi State, is already implementing projects with direct socio-economic benefits, which he said are in line with its vision.
To ensure concrete results, Dr. Adepoju proposed the creation of a joint technical committee to transform discussions into actionable projects.
Speaking earlier, the Director General of the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Prof. Olusegun Ige, highlighted the critical role of geoscientific data in national development, stating that no nation can attain full development without accurate and accessible geological information.
Prof. Ige said that Nigeria is richly endowed with a wide range of mineral resources spread across different states and managed by dedicated teams.
He stressed that these resources hold enormous potential for industries such as aviation, manufacturing, construction, and energy, but can only be maximized through coordinated stakeholder engagement and strategic use of available data.
He further explained that NGSA’s land-based expertise complements NASRDA’s space-based capabilities, which create a natural synergy for collaboration and called on pertinent stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by this partnership to improve resource management and fast-track Nigeria’s path to sustainable development.
