The Portuguese Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mr. Martins Santos, has reiterated Portugal’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with Nigeria in Space Science and Ocean Research through the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and Portugal’s Air Centre International (AIR-C) Portugal.
The Ambassador made this known when he led a delegation of Portuguese experts to NASRDA’s headquarters in Abuja, where discussions focused on expanding cooperation through the Atlantic International Research Centre (AIR Centre) and AIR-C International to explore and develop the vast ocean resources of both countries.
According to him, Portuguese authorities have been closely monitoring Nigeria’s progress in Space Science and Technology, particularly the achievements recorded by NASRDA over the years.
He noted that these advancements present valuable opportunities for both nations to deepen collaboration in areas that support research, innovation, and national development.
Mr. Santos emphasized that Portugal has always maintained a cordial relationship with Nigeria, adding that strengthening ties between the two institutions would enable both countries to conduct joint research aimed at identifying and harnessing resources embedded in the ocean.
Responding, the Director General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju, warmly welcomed the visiting team and expressed satisfaction with the growing cooperation between researchers from both countries.
He noted that the partnership holds great promise for delivering meaningful scientific outcomes that could positively transform society.
Dr. Adepoju pledged the Agency’s commitment and full support in ensuring the success of the collaboration and the realization of its objectives.
Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Director of the AIR Centre International, Portugal, Professor Miguel Miranda, explained that the mission of the delegation was to map out practical strategies for establishing a strong and sustainable partnership with NASRDA, particularly in harnessing ocean resources for the benefit of both nations.
He expressed satisfaction with the level of expertise within NASRDA, describing the Agency’s research capabilities as impressive and promising for future collaboration.
In his opening remarks, the Director of NASRDA’S Atlantic International Research Centre, Dr. Bolarinwa Balogun, stated that the NASRDA team is fully prepared to play its role within the collaborative framework.
He also commended Dr. Adepoju for his consistent support toward the activities of the centre, describing him as a dynamic and visionary leader committed to achieving positive results.
The meeting featured presentations from members of both teams, highlighting their respective capabilities and identifying specific areas for future collaboration.
