Today 28th January 2025 I led my team from CGG Toro to Rivers State University Port Harcourt representing the Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Adepoju for the final MoU signing and commencement of construction and configuration of an Integrated Earthquake Monitoring Station. The establishment of the Integrated Earthquake Monitoring Station at Rivers State University Port Harcourt marks the beginning of NASRDA’s Earthquake Monitoring along the Coastal States of Nigeria.
In 2018, there were reported cases of microseismicity in some communities around the boundary between Rivers and Bayelsa States. Also, vibrations in some oil producing communities in the Niger Delta were reported. As a result of these events, among others, it is imperative to install seismic equipment to monitor the seismicity and understand the tectonics of the coastal states of Nigeria. The Station at Rivers State University will afford us the understanding of these coastal dynamics
We are setting up the CERTIMUS Broadband GURALP Seismometer together with Trimble GNSS R750 COR Monitoring. The integration of these facilities will give us a better understanding of the geodynamic activities along the Coastal States of Nigeria.
We were warmly received by the Vice- Chancellor Prof. Nlerum Sunday, who later signed the MoU along with the Registrar, Mrs Ibimonia Biobele Sotonye Harry in the presence of other University Management staff. The Director General of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju earlier signed the MoU and was ably represented by the Director of CGG, Dr. Dodo Joseph Danasabe.
After the ceremony, CGG commenced work immediately.
