The Director General and Chief Executive of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Professor Matthew Adepoju has expressed the Agency’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships that will advance Nigeria’s space science and technology capabilities.
He stated this when he received a delegation from the Embassy of Spain in Nigeria on a courtesy visit to the Agency’s Headquarters in Abuja.
The NASRDA boss identified research and development, satellite technology, capacity building, innovation and emerging areas within the global space sector as key areas where Nigeria and Spain could explore mutually beneficial collaboration.
Professor Adepoju highlighted NASRDA’s mandate of developing indigenous capacity in space science and technology, noting that strategic partnerships with international institutions remain essential to advancing research, improving technological capabilities and boosting Nigeria’s space programme.
According to him, engagement with Spanish partners provide opportunity to identify areas of shared interest and establish frameworks that will support knowledge exchange, joint research initiatives and technology-driven solutions.
Professor Adepoju further noted that investments in science, technology and innovation have broader socio-economic benefits, including the development of skilled manpower, creation of opportunities for young Nigerians and the promotion of technological solutions to national challenges.
He added that enhanced capacity in technology and innovation could contribute to enhancing systems that support transparency, security and resilience, particularly in areas affected by emerging digital concerns.
Speaking earlier, the Ambassador of Spain to Nigeria, Amb. Félix Artieda, expressed Spain’s interest in deepening cooperation with Nigeria in Space Science, Technology and Innovation, as well as other areas of mutual benefit.
He emphasised the importance of practical collaborations that encourage collaboration in research, institutional linkages and the exchange of expertise between both countries.
The meeting which highlighted the growing opportunities for Nigeria-Spain cooperation in space science and technology, marked another step towards building partnerships that support research advancement, innovation and sustainable development.
