NASRDA BOSS URGES STAKEHOLDERS TO HARNESS SPACE TECHNOLOGY FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Halilu Shaba, has urged stakeholders in Nigeria to leverage the agency’s high-resolution data and facilities to address various challenges facing the country.

He made this statement when a delegation from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) paid him a courtesy visit at NASRDA’s headquarters in Abuja. 

Dr. Shaba who emphasized the importance of utilizing domestic resources rather than seeking solutions abroad, especially when such resources are available at affordable rates within the country, said NASRDA has the potential to significantly contribute to various sectors in Nigeria by providing accessible and cost-effective solutions through space technology and data. 

Expressing his satisfaction with the visit, Dr. Shaba stressed the need for technical teams from both agencies to work closely to address the issues at hand and propose sustainable solutions, which is the primary aim of this partnership. 

In his remarks, the Director General of NOSDRA, Mr. John Lahu, said the purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the two agencies and enhance real-time detection of oil spillage and other illegal activities occurring offshore. 

Mr. Lahu expressed confidence in NASRDA’s capability to assist NOSDRA in monitoring pipeline networks in order to combat vandalism, oil theft, and other illicit activities using technology, given the enormous facilities and experienced scientists and engineers in the agency. 

He emphasized the significance of maintaining and nurturing this collaboration, highlighting its substantial contribution to the nation’s socio-economic development as well as its vast potential to improve environmental monitoring, security, and promote sustainable growth in Nigeria.
