NNAJI HIGHLIGHTS THE ROLE OF GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has highlighted the transformative potential of geospatial technology in addressing critical challenges and driving national development.

 He made this statement during the 2024 Annual General Assembly and Conference of the Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON) in Abuja. 

 The Minister, who was represented by the Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju said geospatial technology provides essential tools for addressing issues such as urban planning, agricultural productivity, disaster management, and early warning systems. 

 Chief Nnaji stated that Nigeria is at a defining moment, where innovation and technology must drive developmental aspirations. 

 He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to advancing geospatial technology as a means of improving lives, encouraging community integration, and sustainable development.

 Chief Nnaji while commending GEOSON for its tireless efforts in promoting geospatial science and raising awareness added that it plays a critical role in national development. 

 In his address, the Director General of NASRDA Dr. Matthew Adepoju described geospatial technology as the backbone of sustainable development and a brighter future for Nigeria. 

 He noted that GEOSON has played an indispensable role in spearheading collaborations and enhancing geospatial literacy across sectors. 

 Dr. Adepoju said, Geospatial technology bridges knowledge gaps and strengthens foundations for sustainable development. 

 He added that NASRDA’s commitment to ensuring that space and geospatial applications are accessible to Nigerians would support in addressing challenges in security, engineering, and infrastructure development.

 Speaking earlier, the President of GEOSON, Surv. Dr. Fitka Bilshaka, noted that the theme of this year’s conference “Leveraging Geospacial Technologies for Integrated National Development” reflects Nigeria’s progress in space technology.

 He stated that, Geospatial science and intelligence must play a significant role in development programs for Nigeria to move in the right direction. Bilshaka revealed that GEOSON boasts of over 1,500 active members across 26 state chapters, reinforcing its impact nationwide.
