Alau Dam Flood Event of 10th September 2024

SITUATION OVERVIEW

Severe flash flooding has impacted over 29,532 individuals in the MMC and Jere Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Maiduguri, following the breach of the Alau Dam in the neighboring Konduga LGA. This incident occurred overnight due to structural damage and persistent heavy rainfall in the Bama, Damboa, and Gwoza LGAs. It is noteworthy that the Alau Dam last experienced overflow in 2012. These figures are preliminary estimates and include individuals in some internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Borno State affected by the dam’s failure. The numbers may be revised as more information becomes available.

Flood Status:

-Time Period: August 21, 2024, to September 11, 2024

– Estimated Flood Extent: Based on Sentinel-1 imagery from August 24, 2024, to September 10, 2024, the flood has affected approximately 19,526 hectares.

– Estimated Number of Exposed Individuals:*Utilizing GHSL 2015 data (250m), the estimated number of affected people stands at 29,532.

– Estimated Affected Cropland: According to MODIS Land Cover 2020 (500m), approximately 2,216 hectares of cropland have been impacted.

– Estimated Affected Urban Areas: Based on MODIS Land Cover 2020 (500m), there have been no reported impacts on urban areas as at the time of this report.
